Energy firm introduces data platform for small power plant maintenance

Image

We worked with a major European energy provider to support the data-driven operation of one of their small power plants. The new data platform uses a Databricks-based engine and allows fast report generation. The client was struggling with varying levels of data maturity across their sites, which the project helped bridge, while also introducing Databricks into a larger part of the organization’s operations.

Challenge

The client was looking to create a data platform for its newly implemented power plant maintenance system.

It had to be developed in parallel with the implementation of a new maintenance system, with a very diverse data maturity across the sites, and therefore with a diverse business need.

In addition to this, Databricks was not yet widespread in the organization.

Solution

The greenfield data platform solution, built on the customer's Azure platform, includes a modern, all-in-one Delta Lakehouse solution with a Databricks-based compute engine.

We delivered a stable silver layer based on native Spark ETLs. With the Delta Lakehouse, the client's analysts can use a flexible, reliable, and easily auditable data platform, allowing them to fulfill future reporting needs with new data mart layers.

In addition, gold tables can be linked to PowerBI, enabling anyone with access to generate reports.
